objective and benefits

My primary goal is to teach others to defend themselves and protect others. Some additional physical benefits include better conditioning, flexibility, agility, posture, stamina, and improved energy. A few of the mental benefits include discipline, confidence, improved self-esteem, improved mood, patience, humility, respect, mental toughness, and improved concentration.

style

Students will be learning a blend of Shotokan and Kenpo, which naturally augment each other. Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art known for its powerful strikes, punches, blocks, and deep stances. American Kenpo Karate is a self-defense combat system, which is known for its quick and powerful strikes, and fighting principles that are highly effective in hand-to-hand combat.

structure

Karateka (Karate practitioners) will learn Japanese terminology. They will learn techniques and reinforce them through drills and one-on-one instruction. They will learn kata(form), which are choreographed movements designed to reinforce the techniques. They will practice kumite(sparring) in a controlled environment, with protective gear. They will regularly learn how to protect themselves and others against a wide variety of attacks.

uniforms and gear

Students must wear a gi(uniform). Visitors and new students can wear athletic clothing that allows them to have a full range of motion. Students will be required to purchase their gi's and belts. Uniform patches will be provided. Sparring gear will be available, but you can bring your own. Gloves and boots are required for kumite. Groin protection, mouth guards, headgear and other forms of protection are recommended but will not be provided.

testing

Test days will be held periodically. In order to advance, karateka will be tested individually. In order to move up in rank, karateka must demonstrate proficiency in their knowledge, stances, strikes, kicks, blocks, throws, and kata.
